How Equipment Financing Works

Financing versus leasing, and what to consider when acquiring business-critical equipment.

Equipment financing lets a business acquire the machinery, vehicles, or technology it needs while spreading the cost over time — often using the equipment itself as collateral.

Financing vs. leasing

With a loan, you own the equipment and build equity as you repay. With a lease, you effectively pay to use the equipment for a term, sometimes with an option to purchase at the end. Ownership goals, tax considerations, and how quickly the equipment becomes obsolete all factor into the choice.

What to weigh

Consider the useful life of the asset, expected utilization, down-payment requirements, and total cost over the term. Because the equipment often secures the financing, approval can be more accessible than for unsecured borrowing — though terms remain subject to lender approval.

This overview is general information, not financial, legal, or tax advice. Every situation is different, and all financing is subject to lender criteria and approval.
